Road Roller – Description
A road roller is a heavy-duty construction machine used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt during road and foundation work. It is equipped with one or more large cylindrical drums made of steel or, in some cases, multiple rubber tyres. The machine is powered by a diesel engine and is designed to apply both its weight and, in some models, vibration to achieve effective compaction. Road rollers come in different types such as smooth drum rollers, vibratory rollers, and pneumatic tyre rollers, depending on the application.

Operation
When the road roller is started, the engine drives the machine forward and backward while turning the drums or wheels. As it moves over the surface, the heavy drums apply pressure that compresses the material beneath, reducing air voids and increasing density. In vibratory rollers, an internal mechanism creates rapid vibrations in the drum, which enhances compaction by helping particles settle more tightly. The operator drives the roller in a systematic pattern with overlapping passes until the surface becomes firm, level, and suitable for further construction or finishing.
