A ping-pong table (also called a table tennis table) is a specially designed table used for playing table tennis, a fast-paced indoor or outdoor sport played with paddles and a lightweight ball. The table has a smooth, hard surface divided into two equal halves by a net stretched across the center. It is usually rectangular, with standard dimensions of about 2.74 meters long, 1.525 meters wide, and 0.76 meters high. The surface is typically made of wood, composite materials, or aluminum-coated panels, and is painted with a matte finish to ensure consistent ball bounce.
In operation (during play), two or four players stand on opposite sides of the table and use paddles to hit a small plastic ball over the net. The ball must bounce once on the opponent’s side before being returned. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball correctly, hits it out of bounds, or allows it to bounce more than once on their side. The net keeps the ball within the playing area and helps define legal shots. The flat, even surface ensures predictable ball movement, allowing for fast reflexes and skill-based gameplay. Ping-pong tables are used for both recreational and competitive sports due to their simplicity, portability, and engaging nature.
