A pool table (also called a billiards table) is a specially designed table used for playing cue sports such as pool, billiards, and snooker. It has a flat, rectangular playing surface covered with smooth cloth (usually green baize) that allows balls to roll evenly. The table is surrounded by cushioned rails and has six pockets (four corners and two side pockets) where balls are sunk. It is usually made of a strong wooden frame with a slate or composite bed underneath to ensure a perfectly level surface and accurate ball movement.

In operation, players use a long cue stick to strike the cue ball, aiming it to hit other numbered balls and pot them into the pockets according to the game rules. The cue stick transfers controlled force to the cue ball, which then moves across the table, bouncing off cushions or contacting other balls. Points are scored by legally pocketing designated balls depending on the game type (such as 8-ball or 9-ball). The smooth cloth surface reduces friction, allowing precise control of speed, spin, and direction. Pool tables are widely used for recreation and competitive play, requiring skill, strategy, and accuracy.
