An electric jigsaw is a handheld power tool used for cutting curves, shapes, and straight lines in materials such as wood, plastic, and thin metal sheets. It is commonly used in carpentry, furniture making, and construction work where detailed or curved cutting is required. The machine consists of a motor, a thin straight blade that moves up and down rapidly, a handle, a trigger switch, and a flat base plate (shoe) that rests on the material for stability. Some models are cordless, while others are powered by electricity.

In operation, the appropriate blade is fitted depending on the material being cut, and the tool is switched on. The motor drives the blade in a fast up-and-down (reciprocating) motion. The operator places the base plate firmly on the surface of the material and slowly guides the jigsaw along the marked cutting line. Gentle forward pressure is applied to allow the blade to cut smoothly without forcing it. The speed can be adjusted for different materials. After finishing the cut, the trigger is released, and the blade stops before the tool is lifted away.
