An auger is a drilling tool or machine used for boring holes in the ground or other materials. It consists of a rotating helical screw blade (called a spiral or flight) attached to a shaft, which helps to cut into the soil and lift the loosened material out of the hole. Augers are commonly used in construction, agriculture, and fencing work for digging post holes, planting trees, and making foundation holes. They can be operated manually or powered by an engine, tractor, or drilling machine.
Operation
When the auger is powered, the spiral blade rotates rapidly and cuts into the ground as it is pressed downward. The rotating motion loosens the soil and carries it upward along the spiral flights, clearing the hole as it deepens. The operator controls the downward pressure and direction of the auger to ensure a straight and uniform hole. Once the required depth is reached, the auger is lifted out, and the hole is left ready for posts, poles, or other construction work.
