Conservation film, also known as protective film or surface protection film, is a thin, flexible plastic film designed to protect finished surfaces from scratches, dust, moisture, paint, and other forms of damage during manufacturing, transportation, storage, and installation. It is commonly manufactured from polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that allows it to adhere securely to surfaces without leaving residue when removed. Conservation films are available in different thicknesses, adhesive strengths, colors, and UV-resistant grades to suit applications on glass, aluminum, stainless steel, painted metals, plastics, wood, and other finished materials. The film is supplied in rolls and can be manually or automatically applied depending on the production process.
Operation
Before application, the surface to be protected should be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or moisture. The conservation film is unrolled and carefully applied to the surface while maintaining even tension to prevent wrinkles, bubbles, or folds. Pressure is then applied using a roller or squeegee to ensure complete adhesion across the entire surface. During handling, transportation, or installation, the film acts as a temporary protective barrier against physical damage and environmental contaminants. Once the protected item reaches its final installation stage or is ready for use, the film is peeled off smoothly from one edge without damaging the underlying surface or leaving adhesive residue. Proper storage away from direct sunlight and excessive heat helps maintain the film’s adhesive properties and overall performance.
